What It Is

Release the Tension That's Holding You Back

Dry needling targets specific areas of muscular tension — the knots and trigger points that keep muscles tight, painful, and underperforming. Using fine filiform needles, often combined with electrical stimulation (E-stim), it reduces pain, improves range of motion, and enhances function.

At WEST, dry needling is never a standalone gimmick — it's one tool in an integrated plan, performed by a licensed, dry-needling-certified physical therapist and paired with the exercise and manual work that makes the results stick.

Who It Helps
  • Stubborn muscle tightness or trigger points that stretching won't touch
  • Limited range of motion that's holding back your sport or training
  • Recurring overuse pain — neck, shoulders, back, hips, calves
  • Athletes looking to recover faster between hard efforts
How It Works

What a Session Looks Like

1

Assessment

We start with assessment and identification of trigger points — finding exactly where tension and movement dysfunction are coming from.

2

Targeted Needling

Fine filiform needles are inserted precisely into the trigger point to release muscle tension at its source.

3

E-Stim

Where appropriate, gentle electrical stimulation is applied through the needles to enhance muscle activation and recovery.

4

Integration

Needling is integrated with therapeutic exercise and manual therapy in the same session, so the release turns into lasting change.

5

Take It Home

You leave with guidance on home exercises and stretches to support your outcomes between visits.

Questions

Dry Needling FAQ

Does it hurt? +
Most patients feel only a small prick as the thin needle goes in — it's much finer than a needle used for shots or blood draws. When the needle reaches a tight band of muscle, you may feel a brief cramp or twitch followed by a noticeable release. Any soreness afterward is usually mild and fades within a day or two, much like the feeling after a good workout.
How many sessions will I need? +
It depends on your condition, and dry needling is rarely used on its own — Dr. Mackenzie integrates it into your broader plan. Many patients notice a change within the first few sessions, and you'll get a clear, individualized estimate after your initial evaluation.
Is it the same as acupuncture? +
No. Although both use thin needles, they come from different traditions. Acupuncture is rooted in traditional Chinese medicine and works along energy meridians. Dry needling is a modern, Western technique grounded in anatomy and neurophysiology — it targets specific trigger points and tight muscle bands to relieve pain and restore movement, and at W.E.S.T. it's performed by a Doctor of Physical Therapy with advanced certification.
Do I need a referral? +
No. Idaho is a direct-access state, so you can start dry needling at W.E.S.T. without a physician's referral. If you plan to use insurance, some plans have their own requirements — we're happy to help you check.
What Our Patients Say

Real Results From Real Patients

★★★★★

Dr Morgan is a miracle worker. She’s worked on my rotator cuff, hamstring and a bad knee. All techniques used (dry needling, cup and massage therapy) have amazing results. Always professional and very patient when working through exercises to strengthen and add mobility to old wore out joints and muscles. Exercises are always on point and make a huge impact if you are dedicated to getting them done. Check her out, you will not be disappointed.

★★★★★

After struggling with upper extremity issues that had completely sidelined me from weight lifting, I began working with Dr. Morgan for orthopedic rehabilitation. From day one, their expertise, attention to detail, and genuine care stood out. They not only helped me regain strength and mobility, but also taught me how to move smarter and prevent future injuries. Thanks to their guidance and tailored approach, I was able to safely and confidently return to the sport I love. I’m incredibly grateful for the progress we achieved together and would highly recommend Dr. Morgan to anyone looking to recover, rebuild, and get back to doing what they love.
